The FUE hair transplant

In recent decades, hair transplantation techniques have become increasingly refined and therefore better. The advent of the FUE method as the successor to the FUT hair transplant method has been the biggest development in this. We will give you more information about the FUE hair transplant method on this page.

The most commonly used techniques

Zantman Clinic performs treatments using the FUE method, making use of the different variations possible within it. Jargon is often used for these possible variations. Examples include FUE CT hair transplantation, Direct Hair Implantation (DHI), Hair Stem Cell Transplantation (HST), micro FUE and FUE hair saving. The multitude of terms can sometimes be confusing. Briefly, it refers to the diameter size of the drill when extracting and the choice of instrumentation to reinsert the grafts. Common hair transplant techniques and jargon discussed on this page are:
  1. FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction).
  2. FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation).
  3. FUE hair saving
  4. DHI (Direct Hair Implantation): Choi-pen
  5. Robotic hair transplant
  6. Sapphire FUE
  7. Micro FUE
  8. Hair Stem Cell Transplantation

Based on the 6 steps of hair transplant treatment, we will discuss the similarities and differences on this page.

Difference between FUE and FUT

As a first step in being able to distinguish between the maze of techniques, it is good to know the difference between FUE and FUT. The main difference between the FUE and FUT methods is the method of extracting the grafts (groups of hair follicles) from the donor area (usually the back of the head). In FUT, a strip of skin is removed for this purpose. In FUE, the grafts are harvested one by one. This difference ensures faster and better recovery with FUE treatment. This is the main difference between the two different hair transplantation techniques. The FUE technique has made hair transplantation a more accessible procedure. A consultation with one of our hair transplant specialists is recommended to make the best choice. Or consult the blogs below for more information:

The rise of the FUE hair transplant method

The FUE hair transplant (Follicular Unit Extraction) is the newest hair transplant method. It is also considered the best technique because it is the least invasive of the available techniques. This is also the reason why FUE is now the most widely used method of hair transplantation worldwide. And this method continues to gain ground on the hair transplant FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) technique. This method continues to gain ground on the older FUT method. The growing popularity of the FUE hair transplant is due to the fact that this method is less invasive than the FUT method. The healing process is faster and one is left with minimal scars compared to the FUT method. Therefore, the FUE hair transplant technique is the most effective solution for hair restoration. A long healing process and large, visible scars are a thing of the past with the advent of this technique. On this page, discover the pros and cons of FUE hair transplantation and learn what variations are possible within this treatment method. Except in the case of FUT, all other hair transplant methods are merely variations on the FUE method. At Zantman Clinic , we take a customized approach to the FUE method, tailored to the client's wishes, the hair problem and the donor material available.

FUE hair transplant treatment in 6 steps

At Zantman Clinic , we treat primarily by the FUE method. There is a lot of jargon within the spectrum of FUE CT hair transplantation, such as Direct Hair Implantation (DHI), Hair Stem Cell Transplantation (HST), micro FUE and other commonly used terms. These are examples of variations on the FUE hair-saving method. At Zantman Clinic , we work with multiple applications of the FUE method. The implementation of the treatment is adapted to your wishes and to your situation. The overview below describes the different steps of FUE and the possible variations.

1. The intake interview

At the beginning of the treatment day, we review with you what was discussed during the previous consultation about the FUE hair transplant. In addition, preliminary photos are taken and the treatment area is marked off by the attending physician. In preparation for an FUE hair transplant treatment, the hair is then trimmed. In FUE hair saving or FUE hair transplantation semi-hair saving treatment, only a strip of hair in the donor area is trimmed. This makes FUE hair transplantation partially possible without shaving.

FUE Hair Saving

Millimizing the hair was a reason for choosing the FUT method over the FUE hair transplant until 2010. With the advent of the FUE hair transplantation method, it is possible to have a hair transplantation treatment while retaining long hair. Only a strip of hair in the donor area is shaved. With FUE without shaving, the rest of the hair falls over the donor area after treatment.

Semi-hair-saving

A variation of FUE hair transplant hair saving is the FUE hair transplant semi-hair saving. In this application, the donor area is shaved down to the crown and the area on top of the head can be kept long. In both cases, the grafts (groups of hair follicles) to be transplanted are placed between existing hairs. The maximum number for this FUE hair transplant treatment is 1500 grafts.

2. Releasing the grafts

After preparation, the treatment part begins in the treatment room. This is done after you have been given a local anesthetic in the donor area. During the loosening and removal of the grafts during FUE hair transplantation, you lie on your abdomen, similar to how a massage is done.

In the FUE hair transplant method, the grafts are detached one by one with a "micro FUE punch. This is an instrument that consists of a hollow micro-needle with a small motor. The size of the punch varies between 0.5 to 0.8 millimeters. At Zantman Clinic , the punch size during FUE hair transplantation is tailored to your situation.

Micro FUE: the diameter of the 'punch'

There are clinics that use only the smallest possible punch to extract the grafts and give that variation its own name, such as micro FUE. The grafts extracted this way are very fine and often single grafts. This is sometimes an appropriate method for a receiving area such as the front line or with a firm hair type (such as Asian hair). For a large treatment area, it may give too fine a result or the number of grafts needed may be up to 30% higher. An important advantage is that the impact on the donor area is minimal. Read more about the Micro FUE method on this page: Micro FUE.

What is a Hair Stem Cell Transplant (HST)?

Another name also commonly used in context is Hair Stem Cell Transplantation (HST). The theory is that by taking out smaller grafts, a portion is left behind. This creates the suggestion of hair propagation. However, a graft always consists of multiple hair follicles and it is not possible to extract all the hair follicles belonging to a graft at once when using a narrow punch. Actually, the technique of a narrow punch like Micro FUE is the same as Hair Stem Cell Transplantation. With Micro FUE, however, the emphasis is on the large number of grafts that can be transplanted and with Hair Stem Cell on the limited impact of the treatment on the donor area. In practice, treatment with a smaller punch requires more grafts for the same result and scarring can be minimized. For small treatment of coves with a short shaved hairstyle, this approach may be a good choice. Read more about Hair Stem Cell Transplantation on this page: Hair Stem Cell Transplantation.

3. Taking out the grafts

After the grafts are loosened, they are removed from the skin with the extraction forceps and placed in petri dishes with preservative solution. Once all the grafts have been harvested, there is time for a sumptuous lunch. This lunch is provided by Zantman Clinic . You can communicate your dietary requirements prior to the FUE hair transplant treatment day.

Difference from the FUT method

The main difference with the FUT method compared to the FUE hair transplant is the first part of the treatment. In the FUT method, a strip of skin is cut out and the skin is reattached. The strip of skin is then cut up into individual grafts.

Healing

The donor area may be sensitive after harvesting the donor material in an FUE hair transplant treatment. When it comes to FUE hair transplant aftercare, sutures are not necessary. This is because the tiny holes grow closed very quickly. The course of wound healing is quite similar to a graze. No scars remain on the skin. On average, recovery is 10 days, but there are also vital people whose skin has recovered after only 5 days. That is, all the scabs are gone.

4. Sorting the grafts.

It is not standard, but it is at Zantman Clinic, that the grafts are sorted by size (number of hair follicles per graft) and thickness immediately after extraction. By working this way, the available donor material can be used strategically during the treatment, so that the available donor material is used optimally.

5. Making the incisions

Then, again under local anesthesia, tiny incisions are made in the area to be treated. These incisions are made with a needle or a blade, depending on the skin and area to be treated and the grafts. The width of the blades varies from 1.0 to 1.2 millimeters. At Zantman Clinic , a needle, surgical blade (blade) or saphir blade is used, depending on the desired result.

Sapphire FUE

Using a Sapphire blade to make the incisions to implant the hair follicles makes no difference to the treatment or recovery. It is desirable for any specialist to use a good fine sharp blade to make the incisions, but the quality of the treatment depends mainly on the skill of the practitioner.

Incisions with laser (ARTAS Robot)

The laser has been in demand for several years, but has not lived up to expectations. Especially on precision and natural implantation, this method fails. In addition, a laser often causes unnecessary damage to the skin tissue of the area to be treated. This technique uses a robotic assistant, such as the ARTAS Robot, to harvest and transplant the hair follicles using advanced image analysis and robotic precision.

DHI: Combining incisions and implants

With the use of a direct-hair-implanter (DHI), it is easier to place grafts. The implanter, called Choi pen, consists of a holder, into which the graft is placed, with a hollow needle attached, which makes the incision. When making the incisions, the graft can be placed directly into the skin. Therefore, more operations can be done at the same time by the medical team. Filling the implanter can also be done by someone with little experience. The main disadvantage of this method is that grafts are unnecessarily damaged because they are first put into the implanter and then mechanically placed into the skin. Therefore, at Zantman Clinic , this method of placing grafts is rarely used in FUE hair transplantation.

Making the incisions has a great impact on the result. The best result blends well with the existing hair and gives a natural look. With a front line, for example, a more random zigzag line is more beautiful than a tight, straight line. Read more about DHI on this page: DHI hair transplant.

6. Deploying the grafts

After making incisions in the recipient area, the grafts are inserted with an insertion forceps. The newly inserted hair roots grow attached within a few days. The co-transplanted hairs sometimes fall out after a few weeks, after which hair growth recovers after three to five months and new hairs grow in the previously bald area. The final result of the FUE hair transplant treatment can be seen after one year. This is also the time when the final checkup is scheduled.

Healing time

Recovery of the recipient area is similar to that of the donor area. For fast recovery, it is important to follow the FUE hair transplant aftercare instructions carefully. This also ensures that nothing happens to the transplanted grafts that can negatively affect the result. On average, the recovery time is 10 days, with the first 2 days really needing to be rested.

Lifelong hair growth

In the area where the grafts are placed, the hair follicles will start producing new hairs. They will continue to do this for life. This is because these new hair follicles are impervious to attack by the DHT hormone. The newly transplanted hair will be indistinguishable from the non-transplanted hair and can also be cared for and styled in the same way.

Is the FUT technique still a consideration?

The FUT technique is the older version of hair transplant techniques. FUT stands for Follicular Unit Transplantation. Before the advent of FUE, this was the standard technique in the field of hair transplantation.

Treatment

In the FUT technique, a strip of skin is removed from the hair crown at the back of your head. This donor area is not susceptible to hormonal changes or other causes of hair loss, so these hair roots can be used to be re-implanted elsewhere on the scalp. The hair roots retain their genetic characteristics even after removal from the hair wreath, with the result that new hair growth can occur in the areas that have gone bald.

After treatment

Many grafts can be placed during a day treatment thanks to hair transplantation techniques, making a single treatment sufficient in most cases. A major disadvantage is that due to the wound suture, a visible scar the size of a pencil mark remains after the strip of skin is removed. With a haircut with longer hair, the scar can be camouflaged just fine.

Why choose FUT?

It can sometimes be the case that treatment with the FUT method suits a client's needs better. For example, with back problems, the posture with the FUE method is a disadvantage that factors into the choice. It is therefore important to choose which of the different hair transplantation techniques suits your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

The risk of medical complications from hair transplantation is minimal. The superficial wounds in the skin generally recover very successfully.
A side note here is that the treatment is performed in an appropriate medical environment and according to proper treatment protocols. At a good hair clinic, this will be in order.

The number of grafts required for a hair transplant treatment depends on two factors. These are your personal wishes and the available donor material (usually the back of your head).
A small treatment is 500 to 1000 grafts. An average treatment is 1500 grafts. A major treatment is 2000+ grafts.

The cost of a hair transplant depends on the number of grafts (groups of hair follicles) required. A small treatment is 500 grafts, an average is 1500 grafts and a large treatment is 2000+ grafts.
The hair transplant costs are clearly listed on the page 'hair transplant costs' which can be found in the main menu. This page also lists available Last Minute dates and other current offers.

The waiting time for a hair transplant is on average 2 months. If you have a flexible schedule, you may be eligible for a Last Minute date. This means that if Last Minute date is available, you can get in within a few weeks. Last Minute dates can be found on the charges page.

A transplant is always done with one's own hair. Unfortunately, it is not yet possible to use someone else's hair. The hair from the donor area, or rather the hair follicles, usually come from the back of your head, but other types of hair can also be used
