Hair loss medication

If you suffer from hair loss, thinning hair or bald patches, there are several options to do something about it. In addition to a hair transplant, you can consider using preventive products.

What can you do about hair loss?

We all know the saying, "Better to prevent, than to cure." This applies to many things, including hair loss. However, many people only take steps against hair loss when hair loss is in its late stages. While hair growth products can sometimes help stabilize hair loss, the youthful hair of the past is not easily regained with hair growth products alone. There are currently a large number of hair growth drugs on the market. Hair loss prevention is a hot topic. However, we can imagine that you do not know which hair growth remedies can be used to prevent hair loss. There are only a small number of hair growth remedies, which have been scientifically proven to workHair loss prevention aims to prevent or slow down further hair loss and improve the quality of your hair. In addition, prevention can also stimulate the growth of your hair.

Hair loss prevention through medication

There are several types of medication that can slow and stop further hair loss. These medications, in combination with a hair transplant, can provide lasting results. But medication can also improve your situation without a hair transplant. During a free consultation we advise you on the possibilities of hair loss prevention. You will get a good idea of whether you could benefit from medication.

Preventive medication

There are also preventive medications on the market that can slow or stop further hair loss in men and women. The most commonly used preventive medications for hair loss are Finasteride, Propecia Dutasteride and Minoxidil. Propecia and Finasteride inhibit the action of the hormone Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Dutasteride has a broader effect. Minoxidil is a topical medication, processed in a lotion. Wondering if this medication can be applied in your situation? Then schedule a free consultation with one of our specialists.

Finasteride and Propecia

Finasteride is the active ingredient in Propecia, a medical breakthrough. It is the first pill to effectively treat male pattern baldness. Propecia inhibits the action of DHT, inhibiting further hair loss. It is also possible in some cases to regain some hair growth in areas where hair was no longer growing before using Propecia. This preventive medication works especially well on the crown.

Propecia is suitable for men and can be used as soon as the first signs of hair loss become apparent, such as a hairline shifting backwards. Propecia is used in tablet form. After three to six months, you may notice some hair growth in the areas where hair growth had previously stopped. For a lasting effect, the drug must be used continuously. When you stop, the newly formed hairs disappear after six to 12 months.

Dutasteride

Dutasteride is effective in treating unwanted hair loss in men. The drug has good results because it blocks two types of testosterone. Finasteride does not get beyond seventy percent of type-2, an enzyme that affects the hair root. Dutasteride inhibits hair loss and, in some cases, can stimulate hair growth. The drug inhibits the production of the hormone Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone that is often the cause of hereditary hair loss in men. Dutasteride is used in capsule form.

You must use the drug for at least six months before the results are readily apparent. You may see an increase in hair in areas where previously no hair was produced, such as on the crown.

Minoxidil

Minoxidil reduces hair loss in both men and women. Minoxidil in women works just as well as in men, contrary to what some others claim. Minoxidil also promotes hair growth in some people after a few months. However, the hair often has a different color or texture than the original hair.

Minoxidil was an American invention, actually intended to treat high blood pressure. Unintentionally, it was found to promote hair growth. It has the disadvantage that the hairs start falling out again as soon as the treatment is discontinued. So Minoxidil has only a temporary boost when applied to the skull.

Minoxidil is available as a lotion. The lotion is applied to the dry scalp and hair.

The maximum effect is achieved after one year. For a lasting effect, you will need to use the lotion daily. When you stop, the newly formed hairs may disappear again.

When are medications prescribed?

Once transplanted hair has a good chance of maintaining itself, although dermatologists support taking hair growth drugs. Nevertheless, if hair does fall out, it is not the transplanted hairs, but the surrounding (non-transplanted) hairs that fail. During an initial free consultation, we examine whether you could benefit from medication. If so, we will educate you about the various options. We also inform you about the use, effect and side effects. This information helps you make an informed decision.

Hair loss prevention and hair transplantation
