Every year, the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) holds a meeting. This year, doctors, medical assistants and others working in the field of hair transplantation from around the world gathered on Paradise Island (Bahamas) to discuss the latest developments in medical and surgical hair loss treatments.

It is almost impossible to cover all topics, so we present the ones we think are interesting and relevant for people suffering from hair loss.

The FUE method and its progress are in high demand. Therefore, about 50% of this year's meeting discussed the evolution and current techniques of Follical Unit Extraction (FUE). This included a comparison between the traditional FUT treatment and the FUE treatment.

Other issues covered at this meeting were Hair duplication (autocloning) and ACell, Robotic hair transplantation, Hair propagation and stem cell therapy, SMP and the safety and efficacy of Propecia (Finasteride).

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)

In the past year, interest in SMP (tattooing of the scalp) has increased dramatically. Many doctors in the USA now offer this in their Clinic. If done properly the results can be great but as with any procedure it comes with a laundry list of pros and cons, limitations and is not suitable for everyone.

Stem Cell Therapy and Hair Propagation.

For some time there have been a lot of expectations and rumors about hair propagation and stem cell therapy. Currently, no one has started Phase III (the critical phase in which efficacy is determined). Unfortunately for those suffering from hair loss, this means it could be another 8 to 10 years before there might be a cure for hair loss or a new type of treatment becomes possible.

ROBOT ASSISTED HAIR TRANSPLANTATION

Several hair transplant doctors have recently started using a robot controlled system at the time of surgery. Some find that the grafts look be taken out sooner but there has not yet been a major evaluation been to the quality of the grafts compared to the other methods, namely FUE or the FUT. Also, one finds that the damage to the grafts is still too high (5-10%). In fact, many physicians find this significantly higher than with the FUT hair transplant.
